Radiata PineChristmas tree seedWe have always sold radiata pine seed for Christmas trees. The general purpose seedlots used in the past are good for Christmas tree production, but now our 'Christmas tree special' seedlot is better. In 1998, with the help of a local Christmas tree grower, we assessed a number of radiata families growing on our seed orchard at Amberley. We were looking for trees that were bushy, healthy, and had a good 'compact'; form. We were particularly impressed that certain families made consistently good Christmas trees. Since then we have used the parents of these families and others like them to produce our 'Christmas tree special'. Assessment of another similar set of radiata families at Blenheim has produced results confirming those from Amberley. There is good demand for this seedlot and we expect trees produced to grow fast but still keep a consistently good, compact, Christmas tree form. » Note: This seedlot is not recommended for timber production. |
