Radiata Pine seed royalties

The Radiata Pine Breeding Company (RPBC) recently reviewed GF Plus™ royalties. The outcome of the review is:

All improved radiata pine seed with a genetic ranking equivilent to GF 16 or better will continue to attract a seed royalty.

Royalties for open pollinated (OP) seed and control pollinated (CP) seed are now linked, with the OP royalty set at 50% of the CP royalty.

Proseed will continue to collect this on behalf of the RPBC to help fund the radiata pine breeding programme. Current royalties are:

OP Seed
$150
Applies only to seed with a rating GF16 or better
CP Seed
$300
Applies to all CP seed

The RPBC continues to make three conditions on sale of GF16 or better radiata pine seed:

1. The seed cannot be used for the production of cuttings or any other vegetative propagules without first obtaining a propagation license from the RPBC.

2. The seed cannot be used for breeding purposes

3. Breeding information associated with each seedlot remains the property of the RPBC and may be used only with the written permission of the RPBC

While the conditions apply to both OP and CP seed, only purchasers of CP seed will be rwquired to sign a declaration confirming that they agree to these conditions. CP seed cannot be released until this declaration is returned.

Placement of an order is deemed acceptance of these conditions.

Fungicide/bird repellant treatment available

We can treat radiata pine seed with a fungicide/bird repellent (thiram-latex) coating.
Cost of coating is $5.33 plus GST per kg. Note: long term storage of such treated seed may inhibit germination.

Viable seeds per kilogram

Numbers of viable seeds/kg for radiata pine vary from year to year. Generally the number of seeds should now be around 30,000 seeds/kg with viabilities in excess of 90% for OP seed and 85% for CP seed.

Larger A graded seed contains about 26 - 28,000 seeds per kg and germinates with slightly more vigour. Smaller B graded seed contains more seeds per kg, about 34 - 36,000.

Note we do not size grade CP seedlots since it would affect their composition.

Pre-sowing treatment

Germination of radiata pine seed can be improved with treatment before sowing. Our opinion is that seed should at least be soaked in water for 48 hours before sowing. Our recommendation is to stratify (cold chill at about 4ºC while damp) radiata pine seed for at least 7 days and if possible 3 weeks before sowing, particularly when using CP seed. This is a recommendation only. Nursery sites vary considerably and nothing substitutes for local experience.
