About Proseed

Our main business is supply of improved seed, mainly radiata pine, for commercial forestry.

We produce seed of radiata pine, Douglas fir, Cupressus macrocarpa, C. lusitanica and Eucalyptus nitens from our own seed orchards in North Canterbury. We are world leaders in seed orchard management.

We are the principal tree seed supplier in New Zealand and can supply the whole range of commonly grown plantation species.

We also collect seed from about 400 other exotic and New Zealand native species.

We are certified by Asurequality and routinely export seed to over 30 countries around the world.

Committed to quality

We are committed to supplying you with seed from the best sources available, and in the best condition for optimal germination. This includes:

Using the latest research findings from Scion (formerly Forest Research) and the New Zealand breeding co-operatives when making up our seedlots and when choosing sources for our other seed collections.

Computer monitoring and laboratory checking of our production, extraction and cleaning processes to ensure our seed is of highest quality.

Certification of major seedlots with the New Zealand Forest Research Seed Certification Service.

Independent germination testing of our principal seedlots at New Zealands national seed testing laboratory in Palmerston North. Major radiata seedlots are also field tested each year.

Research links and industry associations

We maintain active research and technical service links with Scion and with Canterbury University School of Forestry. We are a founder member of key New Zealand research groups:

  • New Zealand Radiata
    Pine Breeding Company Ltd
  • Douglas-fir Cooperative
  • Eucalypt Breeding Cooperative
  • Forest and Farm Plantation Management Cooperative

We are also a member of the International Tree Seed Federation, the New Zealand Forest Nursery Growers Association, and the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association.
