FARM FORESTRY SEEDLOTS
As in past years, in partnership with several NZ Farm Forestry members, we are offering a set of “Farm Forestry” seedlots. These come from sources, well known in farm forestry circles, that have been performing well and our partners are keen to see these strains planted and tested more
extensively in New Zealand. Quantities are limited but will increase as demand grows.
» Check the catalogue page for listing of these seedlots and price information.
Cupressus torulosa "Ashburton strain" (Himalayan cypress)
A very hardy species which is known for its canker resistance. The species is reasonably fast growing, very wind hardy and demonstrates good drought tolerance. The wood is scented, hard
and durable.
Satchell cypress
Origin supposed to be C. torulosa from New South Wales but now in some doubt. Morphological characteristics suggest it may comprise of a mix of arizonica and lusitanica genes. Progeny are reasonably fast growing, definitely show wind hardiness and should have reasonable drought tolerance. Despite some doubts about its pedigree, field tests suggest it is definitely worth trying. To acknowledge the doubtful pedigree, we are classing this simply as cypress.
Cupressus torulosa x C. lusitanica “F1 hybrid”
Again comments on origin above apply. This is a putative hybrid and the owner has made significant quantities of seed available for sale. Again, this is definitely worth trying.
Cupressus macrocarpa "Faulkner strain”
Possibly a canker resistant C. macrocarpa strain. This seedlot has gained a good reputation within the farm forestry community, but has not been formally tested in a trial situation.
Eucalyptus botryoides (southern mahogany)
Fast growing with red, durable, attractive timber. Suited to warmer areas. Okay in saline winds and poor draining soils. This seedlot comes from a stand in which there has been high natural selection pressure against pests, in particular Ophelimus spp. (gall wasps) and Cardiaspina
fiscella (brown lace lerp).
Eucalyptus cornuta (yate)
Straight form strain with extremely hard, extremely strong and durable timber. Very pest resistant eucalypt. Frost tender.
Eucalyptus globoidea (white stringybark) "Glenbervie"
The original seed source was Glenbervie Forest. Progeny have a reputation as the best globoidea in New Zealand. Reasonably fast growing with pale and moderately durable wood. Globoidea will grow on a wide range of soils including sand, gravelly loams and clays. It can survive periods of drought and frosts.
Eucalyptus laevopinea (silvertop stringybark) "Hocking strain"
One of the fastest growing stringybarks, the species will grow on lower fertility sites that are free draining. Regarded as one of the more frost tolerant stringybarks. The timber is pale, moderately durable and very highly regarded in Australia.
Eucalyptus laevopinea (silvertop stringybark) "Hokianga"
Description as above. This seedlot was collected from trees of superior form from a 17 year old stand in Hokianga.
Eucalyptus longifolia (woolybutt)
Attractive tree with slightly glaucous, hanging leaves. Heavy, dense, red, durable timber. For warmer areas. Requires good soil moisture.
Eucalyptus muelleriana (yellow stringybark) "Hocking strain”
Excellent growth and form. Fast growing stringybark suited to warmer areas with free draining soils. Durable timber.
Eucalyptus saligna (Sydney blue gum)
Fast growing, tall species with red, attractive timber. For warmer areas. Prefers free draining, moist soils. This seedlot comes from a stand showinf significant resistance to pests, in particular Cardiospina fiscella (brown lace lerp).
Eucalyptus tindaliae (white stringybark)
Closely related to E. globoidea this stringybark is suited to warmer areas. Grows well in clay soils and is wind tolerant. Good form and very healthy. Produces a durable timber that is used for flooring and inside finish.
Eucalyptus scias (large fruited red mahogany)
A class 2 durable timber with high quality red/brown timber.
